Today I was wondering what to blog about before taking a nice little 8 hour nap. When I awoke from my proverbial mini-coma the answer was so simple. Only remembering what seemed like a few seconds of "dream time" and researching the effects of sleep on the body and mind it struck me how little we really know about dreaming states and how they occur. Hell, most people cite and study the works of Sigmund Freud who did most of his work during the late 19th century. His work breaks it down into three categories involving id,ego and super ego all of which stem from certain parts of one's personality. The information I gathered was solely based on theory which got me thinking how amazing it would be perhaps in the future when the pocket protector posse finds a way to actually look into the minds of the subconscious. Now that I think about it, perhaps the world may not want to know the full extent of what humans dream. According to dream analyst Craig Webb, "Usually we define a dream as an experience remembered upon awakening that comes through nonphysical channels. Basically, it is an altered experience we have when we are sleeping and that we remember when we wake." (http://www.essortment.com/articles/what-causes-dreams_4411.htm) Other theories discuss that dreams are just a simple perception of the outside world around you. This one I personally can vouch for in a small way since during one nightmare i woke up grabbing an ACE bandage box which in my dream state was in fact a 357 magnum pointed at my face. Another funny thing about dreams is you can never willing replicate them through your own wishes. What I mean by this is say you were having a just a spot on dream about (insert fantasy) and someone wakes you up. After cursing them for waking you from such a pleasurable experience you try as hard as you can to replicate that dream as you lay your head to rest again but all for nothing. Nightmares seem to have the opposite effect especially when we are young. I remember having an episode featuring my favorite childhood monster which just so happened to be a costumed creature for the show 'MacGyver'. It could unlike in the show change his size at will. As far as I can remember that every time I would have an episode with my favorite bedtime buddy I would try as hard as i could too NOT fall back to sleep. This is just a small factor of what the fascinates me about the subconscious and how little we still know about the subject.
Sweet dreams.
